Zooming – October 2015

I managed to limit myself to 5 collages gleaned from snippets of photographs from late September and early October. The majority are from Longwood Gardens since that is where I took a huge number of pictures.

They are all botanical except for two: can you find the bee and milkweed bugs.

There are four clips of water lilies (pink, purple, white, and a giant that is white a pink)…the bee is on a water lily but it is clipped a bit too tight to see that one so I didn’t count that one. Can you find the fiddlehead clip?

Can you spot the poke weed? Hint: the stem is bright pink and the berries are dark purple. The connection of the stem to the berry is something I had not looked at closely before.

Zooming – September 2015

The zoomed images included in these collages reflect my travels in late August and early September…and I’ve uploaded them in a way that you can see an enlarged version by clicking on the image.

  • Sunflowers (hint: they are not open all the way)
  • Queen Anne’s lace (hint: from underneath)
  • Maple leaves (hint: already changing color)
  • Jewel weed (hint: it’s yellow rather than orange)
  • Thistle pod
  • Morning glory
  • Zinnias (hint: one red, one pink…the hummingbirds checked them out frequently as they prepared for their migration from Maryland)
  • Chipmunk
  • Crow (really it was a boat tail grackle but the tail does not show in the picture!)
  • Onion flowers

Zooming - June 2015

The ‘zooming’ post is a little earlier than usual this month…but it was such a good month for outdoor subjects that I didn’t want to wait. Can you find:

  • A wild flower?
  • A garden flower?
  • Dogwood?
  • A wood frog?
  • Rattlesnake fern?
  • Garlic scapes?
  • Milkweed?
  • A feather?
  • A goldfinch?
  • Birds nest fungus?

 

Zooming - May 2015

May is always an excellent month for outdoor photography. I had no trouble at all finding a lot of zoomed images to create the collages below. Can you find the

  • Dandelion,
  • Buttercup,
  • Dragonfly,
  • Azaleas,
  • Dogwoods,
  • Trillium,
  • Solomon's seal,
  • Tulip poplar, and
  • Celandine poppy?

Zooming - March 2015

The first half of March has been full of winter weather…and then a thaw.

The ice coated pines, deer browsed azalea, frozen drips on the bushes and the red buds of maple adding some color - all were topics for photographs in March.

Later we got a snow that was not heavy but it stuck to the tulip polar branches, sycamore seed pod, and cat tails. The lady bugs seem to like the indoors this time of year. I couldn’t resist adding at least one Zentangle ®to the Zoom collection this month.

When the thaw stated to occur - the Master Naturalist class made a trek into the woods and found fungus very easily: jellies, shelf fungus with pores rather than gills, and several kinds of lichen on stones and tree trunks.

By the end of the month there will be a lot of spring color. I’m already looking forward to compiling the Zoom collection for April!

Zooming - February 2015

It is often hard to find color in the middle of winter. The colors seem to be mostly white and brown…so the bits of color are appreciated more:

  • The flower and fiddlehead in the green house
  • The red of a pigeon’s eye
  • The flash of blue when a jay pushes the leaves around in the forest
  • The blue sky on a sunny day
  • The blue powder design on a butterfly’s wing

It is very cold today and there is still snow on the ground from a few days ago. But I enjoy the scene of the forest in winter from my office window - staying warm indoors.

Zooming - January 2015

The zoomed images this month are more varied than usual. There were some images from very cold days (mostly in Maryland) and some mild days in Arizona. I’ll be posting about our travel to Arizona in the weeks to come but I could not resist including a little prelude here! Can you find….
