eBotanical Prints – May 2018

I am allowing myself one botanical print post in the main blog of this site each month. This is it for May – the books that contained botanical images that I read during the month. I’ll post about individual books in the eBotanicalPrints part of the site: Botanical blog. Also take a look at the Botanical eBooks list to find links to over 1,400 eBooks available free from various sources.

I read 24 botanical eBooks in May. It is always a little surprising that there are so many that I haven’t found before. In May I discovered some recent garden magazines that were made available via Internet Archive. They have great photography of cultivated plants and carry on the tradition of spreading the news about new varieties and planting designs as the books in the 1800s popularized plants from around the world.

The links to the books are below the sample image slide show.

eBotanical Prints – April 2018

I am allowing myself one botanical print post in the main blog of this site each month. This is it for April – the books that contained botanical images that I read during the month. I’ll post about individual books in the eBotanicalPrints part of the site: Botanical blog. Also take a look at the botanical eBooks list to find links to over 1,000 eBooks available free from various sources.

I read 16 botanical eBooks in April and 15 sample images are shown below. The 16th book (about seed pods) is one that is still under copyright but is available for checkout from Internet Archive. The links to the books are below the sample images.

eBotanical Prints – March 2018

I added the 2009 books to the list on the eBotanicalPrints area of the site and that completes the gleanings from previous years. Take a look at the Botanical Blog.  I’ll keep adding books I browse each month to the list because there still seem to be lots of botanical print books out there being scanned and made available online.

I’ve also formulated a table for the list of books which makes it easier to sort the list….and I’ve added the copyright date.

I only have 12 books to add to the list from March. The sample images are shown first…then the list with links to the ebooks. Enjoy!

eBotanicalPrints – February 2018

Two more years have been added to the eBotanicalPrints area of the site – those books that I discovered in 2011 and 2012. Look at the botanical blog to see what’s happened in the past month in slideshow form. There are now almost 1000 eBooks containing botanical prints with links to access the whole book and a sample image. The list is getting long enough that I am looking for other ways that I can display the lists -maybe a tabular format rather than lists. Hopefully I’ll work out a better way during March.

In the meantime – enjoy 24 books that I browsed last month. The sample images are below, and the titles are at the bottom of this post. Enjoy the colorful blooms in the prints!

eBotanicalPrints – January 2018

The eBotanicalPrints area of the site increased a lot in January. The books I found in 2013-2017 were added to the lists in January and since then I’ve added the books from 2012 and January 2018 to the list…so that they number of botanical ebooks (with links to the book and sample image) number over 800 at this point. Check out the Botanical Blog to see posts on highlighting books and updates to the area as they happen. There are also annual shows in the botanical blog. The lists are accessed either from the pulldown from eBotanicalPrints (from the top of this page) or via these links: by title, by author.

There were 24 botanical ebooks for January 2018! I am showing the gallery of sample images below and the 24 titles below!

Ten Little Celebrations – January 2018

This month was mostly cold…mostly spent at home…but I easily found lot of little celebrations!

I celebrated the model trains at Brookside…on the very last day of the exhibit – January 1. I enjoyed volunteering to help the exhibit run smoothly…and experiencing the trains through the eyes of the children.

20180101_095231.jpg

I made a lot of progress on the collection of botanical prints eBooks area of my website. I am adding to the list of links as I work back through the annual lists of books I read/browsed…picking out the ones that contained botanical prints. So far, the books I found from 2013-2017 are listed – each with a link to the free eBook and a sample image. I celebrated the beauty of the botanical prints the whole time I worked on the collection…and may have the ones from 2012 ready later today.

We had some very cold days early in January and I celebrated my well-stocked pantry, freezer and refrigerator – as I stayed warm at home!

The were three Winter Wellness sessions this January hosted by Howard County Conservancy for their volunteers. Each included a lecture and hike…worth celebrating.

2018 01 IMG_7577.jpg

Conowingo was not as scenic for birds as it has been at times in the past…but the ice on the rocks and railings was worth seeing. I enjoyed being out and about….maybe that was more what I was celebrating.

I had a cold earlier in the month – so of course I celebrated as soon as a started feeling better.

In November I got my box of Foldscopes and was so busy I didn’t put one together until recently. I was pleased to finally do it…celebrated my origami-type success with the pieces and my initial results.

20180122_103459.jpg

My area of Maryland has been very dry. We’ve only had dustings of snow…but we had a day recently that is rained gently for most of the day. We needed the moisture….and I celebrated that it came in an easy-to-handle form.

I had a dental appointment as was pleased that I had no cavities! It’s been a long time since I’ve had a new one and I celebrate after each appointment.

I started out on my weekly grocery shopping drive and notice the sunrise over our CSA buildings. I pulled off the road to take a picture. It was a good way to celebrate the day’s beginning.

400+ Botanical eBooks

The eBotanicalPrints area of this site lists over 400 Botanical eBooks that are freely available. The list is provided by title and author. There is also a Botanical Blog that I’ll use to avoid overwhelming the main blog with botanical oriented content. I’m trying to feature some of my favorite items; there is so much…and it’s hard to pick! A summary of blog posts so far is shown below.

eBotanicalPrints

There is a new area of the website – a collection of links to and sample images from eBooks freely available online containing botanical prints; I’m calling it

eBotanicalPrints

ebotprt anno2.jpg

It’s accessed from the site menu and currently includes 4 things: a general introduction, a botanical blog (where I’m showcasing sample images and providing more detail about my recent finds), and then links to the books themselves sorted by author and title.

ebotprt anno3.jpg

The lists of links currently include the eBooks I found in 2017 but I have at least 10 years prior to that to wade through and add to the lists.

ebotprt anno4.jpg

My intent is to use the botanical blog to showcase the collection. Some of the more general ‘how to’ posts will probably be collected into another item on the eBotanicalPrints pull down for References. Once the number of posts gets longer.

ebotprt anno5.jpg

I’ve also added

Recent-Posts

To the site menu. That page will list the 10 most recent posts for the Blog and Botanical Blog.

eBotanicalPrints – December 2017

December was a big month for botanical eBooks – 28 in all. The first series (Flora Graeca) was from the early 1800s and the second (Le Jardin) was from the late 1800s. Both were full of color. There was another series (Artistic Japan) – also from the late 1800s) that was not exclusively botanical, but I like the ones that were there so much that I included them in the collection for this month.

Enjoy!

eBotanicalPrints – February – March 2017

We are having some very cold days here in Maryland – starting out our days in the single digits…sometimes not making it into the 30s. A good time for me to be working on my lists of eBooks with botanical prints. Today I am featuring books I perused back in February and March of last year

In February, there were more that were photography rather than drawings or paintings. I particularly enjoyed the book about the US Botanic Garden; it was published in 2007…so it was a relatively recent collection of photographs of a familiar (botanical) place.

  1. Tentamen hydrophytologiae danicae  * Lyngbye, Hans Christian * sample image
  2. The British flora medica, or, a History of the medicinal plants of Great Britain c1v2 * Barton, Benjamin Herbert; Castle, Thomas * sample image
  3. Forty years of gardening * Hill, Anna Gilman * sample image
  4. A botanic garden for the nation: the United States Botanic Garden * Fallen, Anne-Catherine; Shimizu, Holly H.; Solit, Karen; Allen, William C. * sample image
  5. The ivy : a monograph comprising the history, uses, characteristics, and affinities of the plant, and a descriptive list of all the garden ivies in cultivation  *  Hibberd, Shirley * sample image
  6. The golden garden guide; a practical handbook of gardening and outdoor living * Strohm, John * sample image
  7. Wild flower gardening  * Taylor, Norman * sample image
  8. Alpines in color and cultivations * Mansfield, TC * sample image

March was more typical with several volumes of A new British Flora topping the list; they were published just after World War I in 1919. European Ferns – the last book of the month – is full of traditional botanical prints; the one I selected depicts a familiar one – rattlesnake fern!

  1. The Gardener's Travel Book * Farrington, Edward Irving * sample image
  2. Wild gardens of New England * Eaton, Walter Prichard * sample image
  3. A new British flora : British wild flowers in their natural haunts - v 02 * Horwood, A. R.; Fitch, John Nugent * sample image

eBotanicalPrints – April 2017

We are still in a very cold week outside so I am enjoying indoor pursuits…time for another botanical print fix….

April was the peak month for my perusal of botanical print books in 2017…37 books in all. More than half were Arnaldoa – a periodical from an herbarium in Peru that started publication in the mid-1990s. I enjoyed the line drawings and the photographs; they are good examples of modern botanical prints. The other series of the month is German – Gartenbau im Reich from the 20s and 30;  the grouping of different kinds of iris – my favorite image from this month – is from the first volume.

eBotanicalPrints – May 2017

This last week of the year is very cold…the kind of weather best dealt with by staying inside…an enjoying botanical prints.

May 2017 included some more recent books; the first photograph is from the 1940s (Trees and Flowers the Hawaiian Islands) and the second is from the  1980s (Woodland Wildflowers from Illinois). There is a fanciful image with flowers and bees…and fairies; I decided to include it since I found the combination of realism and fancy so charming. My favorites of the month were the British Flower Garden series…lots of big beautiful botanical print in those volumes. Enjoy some botanical prints on a winter day!

eBotanicalPrints – June 2017

As I am writing this post is it wet and dreary. It’s just the sort of day to appreciate books of botanical prints.

June 2017 was a big month for botanical books – 27 of them in all. Who knew that geraniums were so popular in the early 1800s. The Botanical Cabinet series had my favorite images – with the top of the list being the magnolia (near the bottom of the images).

eBotanicalPrints –July – October 2017

I am still working on creating a new section of my site. It should be ready by early 2018; my plan to include all the botanical prints books I perused in 2017 to get is started. This month I am getting the material formatted….working out the details for the new section.

Today I am highlighting the books I read from July – October. There were not as many botanical print books because I shifted to butterflies (prompted by my volunteering at Brookside Gardens Wings of Fancy).

July

Most of the books in July were The Botanical Cabinet volumes. There are 20 in all published in the early 1800s. Note that not all the books I am including in the collection are formal botanical prints; sometimes, they are art or catalogs or garden pictures….that are dominated by plants. They are not meant to be scientific documentation of the plant; I enjoy them too much to leave them out.

November 2017

eBotanicalPrints - November 2017

Botanical prints are probably my favorite type of visual images and I’ve found a lot of electronic versions of them over the years. Many of them are scanned versions of books from the 1800s – before photography…a time when exotic plants were being documented and finding their way into gardens of Europe and America.

Back in November, I happened upon several books (items 16 and 23 below) that can be checked out from the Internet Archive; I realized that I had seen the work of many of the artists highlighted in the books…but there were others that I had not found yet. I did a quick check to see if their work was available on the free eBook sources I know about…and was thrilled with several new finds.

That started me thinking about the free eBooks I’ve browsed through previously and how I could make what I’ve found more easily accessible for others with similar interests. I will be creating a new section of my site in 2018 – eBotanicalPrints – toward that end. My plan is to provide a link to the free eBook; if it is there is not copyright issue – I’ll provide a sample image as well.

This post is an experiment to highlight the botanical print books I looked through last month. I’m surprised that there were 26! After the list, I have a gallery of the sample images. The individual images can be accessed via the ‘sample image’ link in the list. The books themselves often have pages of text (sometimes not in English)…but the images are plentiful. Enjoy!
